FLOOR_STORY x Mac Collins

FLOOR_STORY presents a collaboration with British designer Mac Collins. Two handcrafted rugs created exclusively for London Craft Week are displayed in an installation of Mac’s work. A live Q&A explores his creative approach, largely inspired by materiality and brought to life by the East London rug company.

About

FLOOR_STORY presents a collaboration with Mac Collins at their Shoreditch showroom. Two new, handcrafted rugs have been created exclusively for London Craft Week in partnership with Mac, an emerging British designer who strives to create narrative-rich and experiential work.

For the collaboration with FLOOR_STORY, Mac undertook an exploration into composition and was specifically intrigued as to how the rug-making process can evolve into producing something much more than a flat object.

The creative approach sought reference from Mac’s ongoing focus on materiality and drawing specifically from off-cuts, shapes and textures created by default, as part of the furniture-making process.  Working with the team at FLOOR_STORY, Mac was able to suggest contrasting tones and differing edges, to develop the pieces which are intentionally three-dimensional in appearance. Each finished rug is handcrafted in Nepal from Tibetan wool and viscose by FLOOR_STORY’s skilled team of local producers and is GoodWeave Certified.

A specific approach by FLOOR_STORY sees collaborations primarily with those who have never created a rug before, thus ensuring products are always unique and unexpected. Rather than a design, the team aims to develop a mutual, creative concept which is then translated into the final piece.

Working alongside Mac, the design team developed contrasting, bold tones and decided upon specific colours which can be identified in much of Mac’s conceptual and finished work. The rugs made in collaboration with Mac Collins are very striking, vibrant and aesthetically unique; much of FLOOR_STORY’s existing rugs are a celebration of colour, meaning the pieces also work well as part of an ongoing edit.

Talk – FLOOR_STORY hosts a live Q&A with Mac Collins
On Wednesday 6 October, FLOOR_STORY hosts a live Q&A with Mac Collins, chaired by Crafts Council creative director Natalie Melton and followed by a tour of the showroom with FLOOR_STORY founder Simon Goff, looking behind the scenes at colour sampling and design processes.
