About

John Smedley has commissioned a curated selection of works from ceramic artist and QEST scholar Matthew Foster for London Craft Week, presented in store as part of an exclusive exhibition. Each piece is handcrafted and available to purchase.

The collection of works features Matthew’s signature aesthetic of form, surface and gesture of making, always focused on the pot’s suitability to its function and aiming for his interpretation of the Mingei Philosophy. He is influenced by potters such as Shoji Hamada, Bill Marshall, Warren Mackenzie, John Reeve and the potters in the studio, and is currently looking at peasant stonewares of the Korean Yi dynasty, Gongxian pottery, Tang dynasty Chinese pottery and porcelain pots from the Chinese Sung period.

Combined with Matthew’s sources of inspiration is the use of the colour blue, which is iconic to John Smedley, having featured in their logo and branding designs since 1784. Matthew explores the variations of shade and brings them together with his signature style to create truly unique pieces.

During the week, John Smedley and Matthew also launch their new podcast and film series, showcasing Matthew’s journey as a ceramic artist and detailing his process of creating these bespoke products.

Founded in 1784, John Smedley has long had an association with both craft and artistry.
