Meet the Makers Behind London’s Heritage

Heritage of London Trust (HOLT) presents three speakers in conversation with HOLT director Dr Nicola Stacey. Meet model-maker Isabella Gilding, gilder Sue Lee of Eskdale Restoration and stained glass restorer Peter Campling of Chapel Studio. The talks and demonstrations are co-hosted with designer Kit Kemp MBE.

About

HOLT works with the finest craftspeople in London, restoring buildings and monuments across the city. Joined by designer Kit Kemp MBE, HOLT’s director Dr Nicola Stacey speaks to three makers: model-maker Isabella Gilding, expert gilder Sue Lee and Peter Campling, who has been working to restore stained glass for over 40 years.

Isabella Gilding approached HOLT last year and was commissioned to create one of HOLT’s magnificent projects in miniature. She chose Croydon’s Stanley Halls, a highly detailed and beautiful work of architecture with an unusual history. The building once housed bronze busts in alcoves along its façade. These were stolen one night in the 1960s and the alcoves have remained empty ever since. Isabella’s model restores the sculptures to the building and will be used to experiment with new works.

Sue Lee established her decorative arts practice 20 years ago and has worked consistently with HOLT over the years on gilding projects, including at the Charterhouse in Smithfield and the Old Vic. She specialises in working on stone and timber and fine crafts such as water gilding. Sue demonstrates different gilding techniques including ancient and modern methods and materials.

Peter Campling has worked on exquisite stained glass projects across London with HOLT, as well as designing new windows. The jewel-like central window in Caroline Gardens Chapel has recently featured on the BBC. Peter demonstrates the 500-year-old technique of restoring glass with invisible copper thread and painting on glass.

Dr Nicola Stacey has been director of HOLT for six years and overseen many spectacular restoration projects across London. Kit Kemp MBE is a multi-award-winning designer and co-owner of Firmdale Hotels, as well as Trustee of HOLT.

Complimentary refreshments are provided for early arrivals at the Crimson Bar and a goody bag to take home.
