About

Watch one of Crockett and Jones’ skilled craftspeople from their factory in Northampton demonstrate the art of hand cutting leather, known as ‘clicking’. The word ‘clicker’ derives from the ‘click’ sound made when the knife is removed from the leather. Anyone who has been trained over many years in this traditional skill is known as a ‘clicker’.

There are several samples of top-grade skins on show, which visitors are free to see and smell. A clicker’s responsibility is to examine the leather for defects, and to ensure these are not included in the shoes before cutting. Leather defects can be found in the form of barbed wire or disease scars, growth marks or veins. An experienced clicker needs to be knowledgeable and highly skilled in order to maximise the usage whilst retaining the utmost quality.

Crockett and Jones’ clicker is in their flagship store at 92 Jermyn Street on Friday 8 October and Saturday 9 October from 10am. Come along, ask questions and see for yourself first-hand how many of the brand’s shoes begin their journey
