The Sit Still Studio Pop-Up Gallery Presents ‘Mother Quilt and Other Objects’
The Sit Still Studio presents a large handprinted textile work in their pop-up gallery on Calvert Avenue. The piece is based on the idiosyncratic reflections of members of the studio’s community in Wales, who were asked to explore the theme ‘mother’. Displayed alongside the work is a selection of the studio’s newest interior pieces.
About
The Sit Still Studio began this personal piece with 100 workbooks, which were distributed throughout the studio’s diverse community in Swansea, South Wales. Using the workbooks as their inspiration, the studio composed a series of symbols, layered onto cloth using their signature rice paper stencil printing technique and assembled finally into a large textile work: a quilt. The quilt is displayed in The Sit Still Studio’s improvised pop-up gallery space on Calvert Avenue alongside details of the project and a selection of their newest interior objects.
‘We started by inviting individuals to explore the theme mother, more specifically the memory, feeling and experience of being mothered. In identifying and interpreting the findings, the project preserves and makes visible 100 important reflections. The final piece explores the complexities of pictorial representation; we read the individual motifs as both singular and universal depictions of mother. This demonstrates how symbols can be distinctly intimate in nature but allow us room to discern a commonality; their ability to challenge the us/them dichotomy is attestation to their innate power. Craft and cloth is for me the natural vehicle for this expression, the decorative quilt; a historically significant and useful object, is a clear and familiar example of the important role textiles and craft play in our lives.’
