The esteemed Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra is launching a limited-edition two-tone Panton Chair Duo by Verner Panton. A total of 50 chairs are available in the UK, premiered exclusively by The Conran Shop in its Chelsea and Marylebone stores, and online at conranshop.com, during the month of May.

The Panton Chair is a classic of modern furniture design. Conceived by Verner Panton in 1959, it was developed in collaboration with Vitra as the first all-plastic chair to be manufactured in one piece in 1967. The chair is distinguished with many international prizes and is found in the collections of numerous major museums; its expressive form is regarded as an icon of 20th-century furniture design.   

Embodying a continuous curve, the Panton Chair seems more like a freeze-frame of undulating motion than a piece of furniture. The new Panton Chair Duo is a universal homage to the work of the Danish architect and designer, who used colours as a tool for enhancing shapes, patterns and emotions. The Duo comes in five different combinations of two contrasting hues – one on the front, the other on the back. The colour combinations reference the legendary Fantasy Landscape, which Panton created in 1970 for the Visiona 2 installation in Cologne.    

Vitra developed the new Panton Chair Duo in close collaboration with the Panton family. It follows the same production principle as the Panton Chair Classic, with a glossy lacquered surface that optimally accentuates the bold colour combinations. With its dark and light hues, the Duo recalls a vibrant rainbow: green, blue, purple, pink, red and orange. The dividing line between the two tones emphasises the characteristic profile of the chair, offered in five different colour pairs marked with a ‘limited edition’ label.
