About

James originally studied Fashion and Textiles, graduating from Central Saint Martin’s MA renowned Fashion programme in 2008.  Following this he has continued lecturing in the subject to this day.  Having a ceramics practice was always inevitable and his Actioncasting process was born out of his experimental mindset and an interest in spontaneity and allowing the process to be led as much by itself as his own hands.  Colour is used in a kinetic and expressive way, embedded within the first stage of the piece rather than applied to the surface afterwards.  James created the album artwork for Hannah Peel’s 2021 Mercury Prize nominated ‘Fir Wave’, rendering ceramic images for each of the tracks.  James has also developed a studio line body of work alongside an art practice that has been sold in gallery shops and stores worldwide such as The Barbican, Hayward Gallery, Heals, Bluecoat (Liverpool) and Finork in South Korea as well as group exhibitions with Thrown Gallery and Summer of Ceramics at Doddington Hall.

Originally starting his practice in Peckham, South London at the Arches Studios, James is now based in Manchester taking on commissions and producing work from his home studio.
