About

Comprising of video, photography, sculpture, print and drawing, much of Michael Ray’s art practice is deeply connected to his surroundings. He examines the multi-layered histories, fictions and beliefs assigned to artefacts, materials and the places he encounters. Elements of collage and assemblage are often present and he regularly uses found objects and images, as well as material direct from the landscape, appropriating their symbolism while creating a new context and meaning. By layering and combining material, Jonathan is interested in looking beyond the surface of a purely physical existence and breaking down the institutions by which we are taught to see and experience the world.

Born in High Wycombe in 1984, Jonathan lives and works in Cornwall, England. He studied MFA Fine Art at Slade School of art and BA Hons Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University. His work has been exhibited at: Anima Mundi Gallery (2023), Hweg Gallery (2023), Exeter Phoenix Gallery (2023), New Art Centre, Roche Court (2023), Bo Lee & Workman (2023), Galleria Ramo, Italy (2022), TATE St Ives (2022) & Hastings Contemporary (2021).
