Yao Yijia graduated from Shanghai Donghua University with a major in Fashion Design. She became familiar with wheat straw painting by chance and having developed an interest in the craft, she now devotes herself to it. To solve the limitation of colours in traditional wheat straw painting, Yao Yijia adds embroidery to her work to create a new art form.
Wheat straw painting consists of several steps. Firstly, materials are selected. Due to different colours of straw in different places, Yao Yijia collects various wheat straw across the country. Secondly, the wheat straw is cut and immersed in water. After scrapping off the fiber, the material is ironed, trimmed, and patchworked to make diverse paintings in different styles.
