Design Tasmania Presents Brodie Neill, ReCoil
Design Tasmania presents a unique collaboration with acclaimed London-based Tasmanian designer Brodie Neill. Applying his sustainable approach to material and craft, Brodie revisits the indigenous timbers of Tasmania through the innovation of Hydrowood, a precious resource reclaimed from the depths of the island’s lakes.
About
ReCoil is an elliptical centrepiece table comprising an array of reclaimed Tasmanian Hydrowood timbers. These include Huon pine, Eucalyptus, Tasmanian Oak, Celery Top Pine, Sassafras, Myrtle, and Blackwood. By celebrating the spectrum of rich timber tones indigenous to the island of Tasmania, ReCoil continues Brodie Neill’s quest to recontextualise our relationship with materials and our role in the natural world.
ReCoil + Continuum is presented by not-for-profit design advocates Design Tasmania with timber innovators Hydrowood in partnership with the Tasmanian Government.
From his London studio, Neill coiled over three kilometres of reclaimed Hydrowood veneers, in a homage to the annual growth ring formations of Tasmania’s treasured old growth trees. An intensive handmade process suggestive of coming full circle, ReCoil uses by-products of the timber industry in. The sequence of the veneers is randomised by an algorithm, in a visually stunning effect.
The impact of ReCoil comes from its refined, innovative process, and positive message. ReCoil presents an opportunity to explore sustainable pieces, made with an innovative approach to waste streams and materiality.
Supporting the launch of ReCoil is Continuum, a collection of furniture pieces that share a common sustainable ethos. A retrospective of almost two decades of designs, Continuum covers the sculptural vocabulary of Neill’s ability to reimagine waste into finely crafted functional objects of wonder. From reclaimed timbers to recycled ocean plastics, Continuum presents a repertoire of salvaged materials reimagined in unison with contemporary craftsmanship and ingenuity.
The Brodie Neill gallery continues to 27th October.
